The Myopia Calculator App is designed to bridge the gap between research data and the end user. The tool shows the various management options / scenarios and demonstrates the possible benefits, over time, of starting to treat myopia progression. The Myopia Calculator App is a tool that helps eye care practitioners, individuals, patients and parents to apply the research based evidence for various management options and enables the practitioner to demonstrate and discuss ‘risk versus benefit’ for individual cases. The calculator is available in four languages – English, Romanian, French and Russian. You can now choose your preferred language and switch between languages at any time. The Myopia Calculator App can be used to estimate the annual progression of myopia, showing the approximate refractive error that will result with and without myopia management.
This is calculated using the patient’s:
1. Age;
2. Refractive error;
3. Family factor;
4. Annual gradient of progression of myopia (D/Year);
5. Myopia management option;
6. Patients ocular length.
The estimated annual progression is calculated using data from PhD thesis of PhD MD Rodica Bilba with the theme TREATMENT EFFICIENCY AND PROPHYLAXIS PROGRESSION OF UNCOMPLICATED ACQUIRED MYOPIA . The materials presented in the thesis are the result of their own research and scientific achievements and patented by the Inventor Patent at the State Agency of Intellectual Property of the Republic of Moldova number 39 on March 3, 2009.
Using the “estimated annual progression without management” as a comparison, the calculator can be used to determine the extent to which the risk of annual progression can be reduced with a specific myopia control strategy.
The study in order to identify the most effective method in the treatment and prophylaxis of myopia progression was performed during the years 2007-2013 by PhD MD Rodica Bilba at the Department of Ophthalmology of IP USMF "Nicolae Testemitanu"; the results of scientific research were implemented at the Medical Center "OculusPrim" in Chisinau, Moldova. starting with 2010.
